"Very attractive market town." Bakewell by colin_bramso

This is a farming area, so there's a large livestock market very close to the centre of town which is very interesting to visit. Just walk across the bridge over the River Wye, which runs through the town.
Many of the buildings are made of the local stone, with slate roofs. The area is criss-crossed with dry stone walls made of the same stone, so the buildings seem to fit very naturally into the countryside rather than spoiling it.
The Rutland Arms Hotel, which is in the centre of town on the main square, is one of the claimants to inventing the famous Bakewell Pudding. A great place to stay - they do bed & breakfast - and a typical friendly pub for lunchtime or evenings.
Like many English towns and cities, Bakewell has some very relaxing parks. Beautifully maintained, they have flower-filled gardens which are a riot of colour in Spring and Summer. Combined with the local-stone buildings they make a attractive place to stop for a picnic lunch while exploring the area.
