A WALKERS' PARADISE

The Peak park is one of my favourite areas of the UK, a livestock farming area of beautiful rolling hills, quaint little villages and stunning views.

It's Britain's first National Park, established in 1951, and covers an area of 1440 square kilometres. With a population of only 38,000 it has over 20 million visitors a year! Many of them come to walk, spending hours every day, in all weathers, walking the trails.

The park has only one town, Bakewell, but is dotted with small and very pretty villages, such as Milldale pictured here.

One of the nice things for me is that the architecture is controlled, just about all the buildings being of the local stone and slate. The dry stone walls dividing the small fields are also made of the local stone so it all sits comfortably in the countryside looking as though it's part of it rather than standing out like a sore thumb.

I've included much more about the Peak Park in my Travelogue 'My Favourite Places' on my general UK page.

I have separate pages and Tips on specific towns and villages within the park, which you'll find under Bakewell, Eyam, Youlgreave.
