Salisbury Cathedral.

Salisbury's an interesting, attractive, bustling and historic small market town well worth visiting, and an easy day trip from London.

Population is around 40,000, so it's small and compact enough to walk around easily. Twice a week markets are held in the town centre, which has been happening for over 600 years. Market Square in the centre of town is a good starting point to wander around looking at the amazing mixture of architecture from the Middle Ages to today.

And most of all, there's Salisbury Cathedral, arguably the most beautiful in Britain. Building began in 1220 and the beautiful spire, the tallest in Britain, was added later and finished in 1315.

You could easily spend a day in the cathedral and Cathedral Close, there's so much of interest to see. In cathedral cities all over Britain you'll also find "Cathedral Close", a usually beautiful and historic area adjacent to the cathedral where the administration people lived and worked, and perhaps still do.Salisbury has a particularly beautiful Close in my opinion.

The most amazing part, to me, is Magna Carta - the cathedral has one of only four surviving copies of the document, written in 1215. To stand and look at something written nearly 900 years ago is spine-tingling. Magna Carta, by the way, was the agreement between King John and the powerful Barons which is the basis for much of our law today.

The Close is a peaceful area of beautiful houses around a ' village green' and several of the houses contain very interesting museums.
