"Beautiful, small historic city." Winchester by colin_bramso
Winchester Travel Guide: 182 reviews and 344 photos
These ancient cities were built centuries before the motor car was invented, so the streets were built for pedestrian and horse traffic so they're often very narrow and winding, and fascinating if you like living history.
Winchester has a magnificent cathedral which has been a place of worship for 900 years. It houses the grave of the great writer Jane Austen, tombs of early English Kings and is a fascinating place to spend some time.
My favourite building is The Great Hall in the old castle area. It's the only surviving part of Winchester Castle and dates from the 13th century. King Arthur's legendary Round Table has hung in the Great Hall for over 600 years.
Another fascinating walk into history is at the Westgate, a fortified medieval gateway to the old city, which is now a museum.
There's so much to see and do for visitors interested in history, in beautiful buildings, in countryside walks, that I really recommend a day or two here.
