"Beautiful historic city" York by colin_bramso

York was founded about 2,000 years ago when the Romans conquered Britain and has been an important centre ever since.

It's got a lovely human scale to it, the buildings generally old and not towering over the people, the streets small and winding.

The most interesting central area is traffic-free which makes it a pleasure to wander around, free of the danger, noise and pollution of the traffic that has made so many European cities so uncomfortable.

The architecture is a fascinating mixture spreading over hundreds of years. There's a good selection of shops and many cafes and restaurants so you can easily spend several days exploring the fairly small central area.

The River Ouse runs through the city centre on which there are boat trips available daytime and evenings.

There are plenty of other places of interest to visit too, including the many churches.

There's an excellent museum, the castle, there are several ghost walks, a world-famous Viking Centre, historic houses, antique centres, beautiful parks and all are within a small easy-walking area in and around the city centre.

Dominating the city is York Minster, a beautiful cathedral right in the centre of the city. There are many other churches too, smaller but equally historic and interesting.

You can go into the main entrance of the Minster free but there's a charge for going down into the crypt and into the main body of the cathedral.

Nice page on York, Colin. Fairfax House looks like it is worth visiting, but the hotel sounds like one to give a miss.

Damm I have booked this place but only for 2 nights! It is not the one I was looking for near the Station...someone gave me the name of the one I had seen the next day.
