Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: The Grand Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you do nothing else in Bangkok, you must visit the Grand Palace. The name is misleading, because it's not 'a palace' but is actually an area of nearly 22 hectares. A quiet oasis in the bustle of the city, it is full of astonishing buildings. They are Royal residences, temples and government offices. The architecture, the colours, the gold leaf, the attention to detail are breathtaking.

Chao Phraya River: The Chao Phraya River.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bangkok's river, the Chao Phraya, isn't the prettiest I've ever seen, but it does have a wonderful atmosphere. It's crowded with a mixture of tour boats, ferries and working craft all jockeying for position, many with a colourful garland of flowers dangling from the bow.
Take the trip out of the city to the village areas and to see the floating markets. That's ladies in small boats paddling around selling various fruit and vegetables or cooked food, and other items, to the villagers who live on the river banks.
