For me, staying in a cheap hostel would be good enough for me to lay my tired body.
If you have a good guidebook on Iram there are many hostels & hotels would be listed to suit your budget.
In choosing the best places to stay, I would also think about the conveniences.
In Kerman, I stayed at Kerman Hotel (USD 20) because the hotel is conveniece for me as it's just next to the bus terminal. I could get a place in the centre & pay about USD 5 but I chose not to.
In some places, there would only be one expensive hotel or one cheap hostel so I wouldn't have any choice but to stay there even though for just one night.

Staying with the local people is a great way to discover about their city & the way they live !
I was in touch with a few people in Tehran & in many places that I would be going to.
Of course. not everybody wants to meet up with you let alone accomodate you.
Worst, some local people ONLY like to meet up with people from certain countries that they feel comfortable with.
I was lucky to be invited to stay (even for just a night !) with Dr. Hamid at his place on Azadi Street in Tehran.
I was also invited to stay in some homes by the locals in some places that I went to but because their homes were further away from the sights, I declined.
