ICELAND
Akureyri; The northern-most city in Iceland !
It was my last destination of the bus trip from Hofn (south-east Iceland) - nearly 8 hours journey : Passing through Egilstaddir & Lake Myvatn.
Everything was almost closed when we reached Akureyri. Me & Brian (whom I first met in Hofn) slowly dragging our baggage out from the bus...
Looking for The Youth Hostel; God ! It took us 30 minutes to reach the place...
Far from the bus station. We walked there...
Nice place to stay, clean & very comfortable.
Again, no shoes can be worn inside The Youth Hostel.
This rule applies to ALL Youth Hostels in Iceland.
This is a sign that hikers are welcomed but no their boots !
Sums up why people want to come to Iceland in the first place - to do lots of walkings !
We just put our luggage & went out 'cos didn't want to wait for her !
Then, we went back & properly checked-in & then went out. Again !
Checking-in meaning have to wait for the girl at the counter to come, maybe half hour, maybe 1 hour, maybe more ! No check in also means can't get a bed there...Figure that out yourself !
Akureyri is surrounded by mountains...
Scenic !
Akureyri also sits on a bay where ships dock. Beautiful...
Akureyri also has that quirky houses. Simply beautiful !
Quirky here meaning nice-looking houses, like toy houses...
Weird designs like they don't really belong in the world that we know...
The houses are 'an almagamation' of the houses from the last few centuries...Okay, I shall put it that way.
It is the city of the 'midnight sun' for me ! Hence, we couldn't figure out the time whether to walk around the city or to just fall sleep...
The weather ? COLD !
Maybe 3 to 7 degrees celcius...
While walking, Brian said, "Let's go to the park !".
A park ? Why ?
A Botanical Garden more like...
We walked around the garden, beautiful with all kinds of flowers !
We wanted to see flowers, y'see...& trees.
One thing, we couldn't figure out HOW some tropical plants & flowers were also grown in the garden.
Brian wanted to walk further...but err, I was hungry.
Sadly, couldn't find a place to eat ! Everything by then were closed.
Walking back to the hostel;
Time to 'cook' !
Instant Spaghetti with instant Bolognese sauce for me ! ALL in one packet. Put it all in boiling water !
Siggi introduced it to me while in Reykjavik. Wonder if I could get it in Malaysia...
It was delicious ! For us 2 hungry kittens...
After 'dinner', I had a puff...as usual.
Then, off to sleep.
On the upper bunk bed. Prayed that I wouldn't fall over.
Slept well...
Outside, it was still daylight !
Good Night Akureyri...
You DID welcome me !
Thank you, thank you...
It was in Akureyri that I made a plan to reach back to Reykjavik & from there, I wanted to make 2 great excursions on my own in the SOUTH of Iceland :
SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK / SVARTIFOSS WATERFALL;
On the following day, a journey to : ELDGJA / LANDMANNALAUGAR
I could use my Omni Buspass ONLY to reach Skaftafell National Park BUT I had to pay full price (less 10% of Omni Buspass Holder) for the journey to Eldgja/Landmannalaugar...
Akureyri climate supports diverse vegetations; The locals take efforts to plant trees & flowers to maintain the city's lovely atmosphere...
Akureyri is only about 100 km (60 miles) from The Arctic Circle !
It is a small city which is easy to see on foot. Shops, restaurants & businesses are concentrated in the area between The Bus Terminal & the football Stadium.
Akureyri Fishing Company is Iceland's largest & the city's shipyard is also the busiest in the country...
I was there for just an evening ! Nevertheless, I took enough photos to introduce this small city to the world (I hope !).
My photos are divided into :
The Sights Around The City -

- Pros:A Beautiful Small City In The North Of Iceland !
- Cons:The Weather Could Be Too Demanding For Some People...
- In a nutshell:A Visit To The Botanical garden Is A Must !

I do agree with you on the weird looking houses. Didn't you get to see the inside? They look like model houses seen on a toy train track, dont they?
Many beautiful pictures, amazing landscapes in the background and... the botanical garden :-)
Nice pics from beautiful Iceland! Looks like you had a great trip there. Only the plants didn't look very welcoming, LOL!;-)
Good job !!!
