ILIRSKA BISTRICA<<<<<PREDJAMA>>>>>POSTOJNA

SLOVENIA
Friday 20th June 2003
What'll I do without Ivan. He drove me to Predjama to see a castle which otherwise not easy to get to. Unless you have own vehicle.
The Castle perched on a cliff, impressive view it really is. Decided not to go in & explore the interior although I should; because I was rushing to Postojna Cave a few miles from Predjama.
Spent a good 30 minutes or so, taking photos around the Castle. Ivan told me the story of how the Castle was hard to conquer & the enemy had to bribe a servant, to tell them (the enemy) when the Robber Baron 'passing the motion' in the toilet. The enemy then shoot the cannon to the direction of the toilet hence killed the Robber Baron. Maybe Robin Hood was killed the same way.
Got in the car, bid farewell to Predjama Castle.
Predjama Castle is a good excursion from Ljubljana if you have car to get here, by bus it would be a few stops in some places; another possible way is to rent a bike from Postojna.
I was rushing to Postojna to enter the Cave by 4 pm because Human Fish were waiting for me in Postojna Cave !

Predjama Castle, which perches dramatically at the entrance to a cave high in an overhanging cliff, is the only representative of cave castles in Slovenia. Its basic features were formed in the 12th and 13th centuries, but the Renaissance gave it the final stamp with the construction of the imposing Kobenz gate tower. The legend of the famous robber baron Erazem Lueger, who met his violent death here, is deeply impressed in Slovene folklore.

No matter how spoiled the visitor is, a visit to the castle and its immediate vicinity is an unforgettable experience. Traces of cave men, Erazem's ingenious and practical medieval castle, the present castle with its many restored chambers and rooms, the rich castle furnishings, the view from the middle of the precipitous cliff, the adventurous trip down Erazem's secret tunnel, a visit to the fabulous underground-all these have made Predjama Castle one of Slovenia's most popular tourist sites for several years. Numerous cultural events and a traditional knightly tournament further enrich the program at Predjama Castle.

Opening hours:
November-February 10:00-16:00 (Saturdays and Sundays 10:00-17:00); March, April, and October 10:00-17:00; May and September 9:00-18:00; June-August 9:00-19:00. Tours of the cave beneath the castle: May-August at 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, or by prior arrangement. Several-hour explorations of the East Tunnel and the Erazem Tunnel are also possible by prior arrangement.

Cool pictures of the cave--I never got under the castle to see the cave system. But the castle is pretty cool in its own right.
