SALZBURG<<<<<BRATISLAVA>>>>>CACHTICE

SLOVAKIA
Monday 13th May 2002
Arrived in Bratislava train station from Vienna. Called Marek, my super Slovak friend who would be my host in his country. He accompanied me to some of the amazing places in Slovakia.
I remember the train station looked drab. I could say about the city also. Sorry Marek but that's what I thought.
I couldn't say about the people though. Young people were trendy as if this is the new fashion capital of the world ! So there.
Marek insisted that I stayed in his hostel. He convinced me that it's safe.
Dragged my luggage to his hostel room. I love it because it reminded me of the room in my own school hostel. met his room mates. Nice guys...
Went out. Wandered around Bratislava. The city was nice. Some buildings were drab. Always the bad things stood out first anyway.
As we walked further, Bratislava opened bit by bit for me. Climbed the hill for some scenic views over the city. Fantastic !
Walked to the Castle, no complaint ! took the bus to Devin Castle but we forgot that it was on Sunday, it was closed. No problem because I knew I would be seeing more castles around Slovakia anyway. Missed one, 10 more to go.
We went to a bar in Bratislava called KGB Bar. You guys have to come here ! All the memorabilias from that gone-era were displayed on the wall in this bar. Nice drinks, we had. What was it called Marek ? Nivea or something...Me & Marek had some serious topics to discuss in this nicely lit atmosphere in KGB Bar.
Time to walk back to his hostel. Almost stopped by a lady who's doing her round check in the hostel. Marek explained to her smething in Slovak so I didn't understand. Something like convincing the lady that I was the cutest thing since sliced bread. To that effect anyway. It worked.
Time to take shower. Basement shower room. Filled with students.
At night, they (Marek, Michal & Lukas) insisted that I had to try their vodka as a welcome gesture. They said I had to gulp at one go. There's always new things to try I thought to myself.
Gave Marek the SAW tape that I got for him in Malaysia. SAW was the producer team who shaped up Kylie Minogue when she was started singing. She was still a virgin then !
They (Marek & co) prepared me a bed to sleep on. Thanks guys. I dozed off right away. Another day awaited me tomorrow...
Okay, please don't let the word 'drab' put you off in visiting Bratislava. The city is super nice especially it has many sights within easy walking distance to one another. Well, a bus to Devin.
The young people are especially very trendy.
The bridge on the photo above. You wouldn't expect to be the most amazing sight in Bratislava. It really is.
Bratislava may be slow in promoting itself, but that would make this city among the hidden cities that the world missed out.
Their lost !
Thank you.

A MUST SEE...

DEVIN CASTLE

Bratislava (Pozsony in Hungarian, Pressburg in German) is Slovakia's largest city and has been the capital since 1969.

Here the Carpathian Mountains, which begin at the Iron Gate of Romania, finally come to an end.

As you arrive at the main train station, you'll see vineyards on the slopes of the Little Carpathian Mountains, where they meet the Danube River. The Austrian border is almost within sight of the city and Hungary is just 16km away.

Many beautiful monuments survive in the old town to tell of its past under Hungarian rule, and Bratislava's numerous museums are surprisingly rich. Franz Lizst visited Bratislava 15 times, and the opera productions of the Slovak National Theatre rival anything in Europe. Bratislava isn't as swamped by Western tourism as are Budapest and Prague (except on weekends when the Austrians invade).

The old city and the castle are the best parts of Bratislava - the rest of the city is pretty drab. The old city is packed with museums (such as the Municipal Museum which comes complete with torture chambers and the Museum of Wine Production) and palaces (such as the Primate's Palace, where Napoleon and the Austrian Emperor Franz I signed a peace treaty in 1805, and the rococo Mirbach Palace). The castle, built above the Danube, was a frontier post of the Roman Empire from the 1st to the 5th century. Since the 9th century it has been rebuilt several times, most recently between 1953 and 1962. Climb up for the great views and to check out the very interesting Museum of Folk Music within. The Slovak National Museum and the Slovak National Gallery on the river are also worth a visit.

Hviezdoslavovo námestie (square) is a convenient orientation point, with the old town to the north, the Danube to the south, and Bratislava Castle to the west. Bratislava's main train station, Hlavná stanica, is several km north of town. Most of the cheaper hostels and mid-priced hotels are north-east of the centre. The food market in the centre of town is a good place to eat; there are ritzier restaurants in the vicinity of the castle.

Arriving from Vienna by train..waited by a great friend, Marek. Stayed for one whole day in Bratislava & spent the night at Marek's hostel!!

My next destination from Bratislava was Cachtice Hrad, pictures on my Cachtice Page. Have a visit....

Thank You.
