Auschwitz 2 : a.k.a Birkenau Death Camp

POLANDSunday 19th May 2002The grounds of the former Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz, are one of the most known mass genocide sites from the 2nd World War. In this place, from 1940 to 1945, the Nazis murdered approximately 1.5 million people, primarily Jews from all countries of accupiedEurope, as well as Poles, gypsies, Soviet prisoners of war & people of other nationalities.

The Auschwitz camp consisted of 3 separate parts:

Auschwitz 1 in Oswiecim...

Auschwitz 2 Birkenau in Brzezinka...

Auschwitz 3 in Monowice.

At the end of the war, the SS, in an attempt to erase all signs of the crime, began to take down & destroy the camp structures, & evacuate all prisoners capable of work deep into the Reich.

On January 27, 1945..the soldiers of the Red Army entered Oswiecim, thus liberating the camp & saving the lives of the prisoners there who the SS had not yet managed to take away or murdered.

In 1947, the Polish parliament called The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museumin to being, & entrusted it with the mission of preserving the grounds, structures & remainders of the camp forever. Primarily, however, the former Nazi camp is a memorial & Cemetery to which thousands of pilgrims from the world over pay their respects to those murdered.

This collection pf photos taken by me in May 2002, display the way former Auschwitz 2 Birkenau in Brzezinka look today.

I continued to Brzezinka from Oswiecim, a couple of miles away, by the shuttle/bus..included in the ticket for the Auschwitz 1 in Oswiecim.

A MUST SEE...

The place is massive ! The left photo is showing the Prisoners Barracks...Notice the electric fences.

This was the rail tracks which imported the perished ones to the ground of Auschwitz 2 : Birkenau
We can see people walking along the railway tracks sort of to pay respect for the people who perished here.
