The Statue Of The Fencer... - Wroclaw
The Statue Of The Fencer...

In November 1904 in a little square in front of the main University building a fountain with a naked statue of Fencer (Szermierz) by Hugo Lederer, a sculptor from Berlin, was unveiled. The legend has it that the sculpture was founded as a warning for other students by an inveterate gambler (perhaps the artist himself) who was so captivated by playing cards that he had lost everything but a sword which the Fencer leans on. After the statue was erected, the rector of the Catholic St. Maciej's parish at Schuhbruecke St. (now Szewska St.), dr Alois Schade, sent in a protest to the municipal authorities, claiming that the figure of a naked man may scandalise the public and pose a threat to the morals of the students. However, the Mayer of Wroc?aw, dr Georg Bender rejected the protest, saying that the Fencer is a work of art and as such it provokes aesthetic feelings rather than carries erotic undertones.

Directions: It's on a little square in front of the main University building, you wouldn't miss it.

Church of St. Elizabeth... - Wroclaw
Church of St. Elizabeth...

You cannot miss the 90 m tower which took a century and a half to build. This Gothic beauty remains one of Wroclaw's most incredible churches.
The tower is the highest in Lower Silesia.
In the church itself, there are 100 tomb-stones, some with great artistic value.

Directions: In the Rynek area.

The Church Of... - Wroclaw
The Church Of...

We are still at the Church of St. Elizabeth.
I wandered around the area, looking at some of the best early morning sights that I could capture.
Notice that the walls of this church are made by red bricks.
The structures are very beautiful.

Directions: Just next to the RATUSZ.

Still here... - Wroclaw
Still here...

Still at St. Elizabeth Church, just next to the Ratusz, the City Hall.
Now, I took this photo of a door of the church.
Very highly decorated....
I remember that I went near to see some of the small statues adorning the door, but didn't take their photos.
At least you could see the whole door, just click on the photo to see some statues (well, of what are clear to the naked eyes anyway).

Directions: Next to the Ratusz.

The View Of... - Wroclaw
The View Of...

This is the view of St. Elizabeth Tower, taken by me from the ground.
One of my favourite photos around Wroclaw city.
Almost every sight is so magical & I wonder how it would look like during the night time.
I didn't have the chance to see it as I had to leave for Legnica (another beautiful smaller town) on that same day evening.

Another View Of... - Wroclaw
Another View Of...

This is another view of the Rynek, the Market Square in Wroclaw.
It was still early, probably about 7 or 8 am when this photo was taken by me.
People were just coming out to set up their businesses etc.
It was a lovely morning, being in one of the most beautiful market squares in Europe.
I recommend that you should make a trip here. Come here from Berlin, or Krakow but make it a must visit destination in Poland.

Around The Rynek... - Wroclaw
Around The Rynek...

This tower is also part of the Ratusz.
Situated behind the Ratusz (depends on how you look at the City Hall anyway).
This tower is 66 m high & a Renaissance dome crowns the tower.

Directions: Behind the Ratusz (City Hall).

The Market Square... - Wroclaw
The Market Square...

The Market Square in Wroclaw is also known as Plac Solny (Salt Square).
It is just the OPPOSITE of the City Hall !
The square was originally the site of a salt trade, but these days only flowers are on sale.
On my photo, you can't see any flowers yet, too early in the morning...

Directions: Situated in the south-western corner of the Rynek.

The Market Square... - Wroclaw
The Market Square...

Like most post-war towns in Poland, 'old' refers more to historic age than reality. Although Wroclaw suffered little damage in WWII, its sparkling new 'Old Town' proves what a little effort can achieve. Originally established in the 13th century, the present day square remains one of the largest in Europe.

The Fountain... - Wroclaw
The Fountain...

This fountain is located on the west side of the Main Square.
Although some people might argue that this fountain looks tres moderne as compared to the buildings around the main Square, but the square itself is full of activites, with restaurants, performance artists...to make it such a lively atmosphere all around.

Directions: In the Rynek in Wroclaw.
