HUNGARY
Friday 7th June 2002
Feeling lost when I arrived at the train station. Feeling lost when 2 guys that I was supposed to meet weren't there. Well, their lost ! One came finally holding a big cardboard sign bearing my name, felt like I was a vegetable with a price on it. Alain, the guy...Alain, the friend...Alain, my host...Alain, he who put his caring to me during my stay in his adopted city. He's from Paris, y'see.
Everything I did in Budapest involved Alain except some places which according to Alain not suitable for a nice Asian guy like me. Okay.......
Then, came Doru ! A Romanian, Alain's friend. Me & Doru were like a cigarette & its lighter ! We charted ourself on Budapest map & left our marks wherever we butt off our cigarette...
Budapest is an amazing city but you have to know where you could go, where you want to do & how much; when the closing & opening times are; when the time for men & when the time for women; I mean Turkish baths.
Sample some of the oh-so-cool-so-hot-so warm-so rich in minerals of the Saunas' water in many points in Budapest. Go & see the classical/opera performances held at Budapest Theater. Check the shops if spending money is your biggest problem & you will bring back the ONLY souvenir from your travel in Budapest.
Classic buildings aplenty, go climb up the hill & watch Budapest from the top & don't come down until you talk to somebody.
I stayed so long in Budapest that even the guys & old women at the swimming pools knew how to pronounce my name ! Watched La Pianiste here & Star Wars Volume 5 here. My first & second true experiences seeing Pavarotti & Kanawa wannabees performing arty gestures with their hands...
Budapest is less touristy than Prague but they almost look alike. Felt alike, maybe derived from the same cradle. The people were trendy, the metros were safe & fun to be at; metro-hopping is my favourite but had to make sure the money is in my front pocket!
Have I mentioned the night time yet ? Sorry, that's my business; at least in Budapest.
Be there.

MUST SEE...
Chain Bridge on the right photo. This is Budapest's FIRST bridge. A historical monument in itself. Count Istvan Szechenyi commisioned William Tierney Clark to design the bridge. Construction lasted from 1839 to 1849.
The bridge was badly damaged during the First World War & it was rebuilt in 1949, on its 100th anniversary.

2 places that I want to share with you guys are :
FISHERMEN'S BASTION
MUSEUM OF APPLIED ART

Arriving in Budapest on Friday 7th June, 2002 by train from Vienna

Feeling a bit lost at first then, a French friend, Alain who's living in Budapest came to fetch me & it was a heartly warm welcome for me !

Budapest captivated me so much that I stayed for 11 days !The longest stay in any of my previous destinations!

In Budapest, I went to the Opera, the first for me!...watching Star Wars Episode 3..;watching La Pianieste....went to the Turkish Baths, the historical places....an excursion to Szentendre...meeting Hungarians, French, Romanian.....

Budapest is almost my last destination for my 2nd trip to Europe....( I still have to take my flight back from Vienna...) & Hungary was my last country visited, the 6th from the list - Austria, Slovakia, Poland, Germany & Czech Republic....

Please have a visit to all my Travel Pages, in these 6 countries....with many many places that I went to, plus great photos that I took along the journey!

Thank You.

Budapest is always a city that calls me? I had a Hungarian friend but sadly he conned me me out of money? I hope all Hungarians are not like this?

I would love to see Budapest soon. Seeing Wagner's "A Walkür" at the Opera House sounds divine! I'd love to see an opera at this magnificent structure! Shocked that I like opera Arnaud? Yes, yes, I know...it always happens. Learn....Arnaud...learn... ;-)

Toured the Opera House but never got to see a performance. Lucky you! Must make a return visit there pretty soon. Your pics encouraged me. Thanks!
