A Town Inside A Medieval Palace...

...More Shops Than Actually A Town...

DUBROVNIK<<<<<SPLIT>>>>>ZADAR

CROATIA
Thursday 26th June2003
Yep, more shops than actually a medival town. I was not coming here to shop anyway so it didn't bother me a bit. The Diocletian Palace, that's the reason why I was here.
Prior to arriving in Split, I had this annoying experience when at the border to enter Bosnia-Hercegovina (I didn't even know that I had to pass through another country when taking the bus to Dubrovnik from Zagreb but on the way going was no preoblem) when the officer asked me whether I was a tourist. What should I say "A Go-Go Dancer" ! Be honest as they say, right ? The officer took my passport away for an annoying 5 minutes to check whether it was a pornbook that they could practice their lap dances at night & then came back, smiling & tossing back my passport to me. Maybe my passport to them was something kinky after all. Anyway arrived at Split bus station, secured my luggage & walked to the Diocletian Palace. A palace ? it didn't look like it anymore. Traces of the ruins, yes that's visible.
Maybe at night, this place would be so impressive, but during the day it was just a place with walls, centuries-old walls & shops, houses & cobble-stoned streets within the confined of this 'palace'.
It is big, oh yes. Looking at some of the stones remind me of the times when men wore white skirts & women wore white gowns.
Asking myself several times whether to wait the night time to see the 'impressiveness' of the Diocletian Palace or moved to my next destination. Even thinking whether this place would be haunted at night. That could be fun.
The Tourist Office was closed maybe lunch hours. Some shops were closed maybe lunch hours. The restaurants were opened because of lunch hours.
Walking a bit more. Came to some stalls selling cheap stuffs, reminded me of Kuala Lumpur.
Should buy something here. Bargain ! I was that good this time because it took me to the fifth stall when I bought a watch which cost me about 4 Euros. Good, after 2 months I still am wearing this watch. My true memory of Split.
Checked whether I could sleep cheap in Split, to no avail. Called Youth Hostel in Zadar & they had one bed left, maybe for me they said.
Collected my luggage & the 'garderoba' guy looked at me as if I was in a hurry to cross the border or something & he was not wrong. The bus was waiting for me, that's why & continued my journey to Zadar.
Again, amazing sea, coves & naturists sceneries along the journey. The same could be said about the journey from Dubrovnik to Split but of course I didn't want to go through the border again without having some tea-stains on my passport !
If you want to stay in Split, just do so. If offers you an old street & a few centuries-old unkept 'palace' to snap a few photos to & judging by the yachts parking at the harbour just in front of the Diocletian Palace, this is a place to have a good holiday in.
Me, I moved on.

MUST SEE...

Grgur Ninski Statue....on the right !
Split must be discovered to feel the real glory of this 'old' place...
I was here for about 2 to 3 hours only..I was damn happy about that anyway.
For the rest of you, maybe stay here for a day, then really discover THE DIOCLETIAN PALACE !
The statue on the right was in the area, as museums, walls...& shops, all consist in this MEDIEVAL PALACE !
I REPEAT, A MEDIEVAL PALACE !
Some stupid *** told me otherwise,...whatever !
This member is so obvious creating the account just to harass me !
The next person commenting about this was THE CULPRIT !...
Anyway, please go there yourself, enjoy the place & make a page on Split !...
The Peristyle...in THE DIOCLETIAN PALACE.., photo on the left.

SOME AREAS IN SPLIT :
Train & bus station are in
Bacvice area.
Walk pass the
Lucac area to go to the Diocletian Palace. Many stalls in this area selling pirate watches, belts etc. I bought a watch !
The palace itself & its west surrounding is known as
Grad.
Inland areas facing the sea/bay are
Lovret & Table. This is behind Grad areas.
Veli Varos is between Grad & Marjan Hill.
The foothill of Marjan Hill, overlooking the sea is
Meje.
.....phew !....
