BELGIUM
Some people called it "Brugge', some people call it "Bruges', both are the same. My first medieval town in Europe ! Accompanied by Reg, who's almost a caretaker to me.
Explore the town, tourists were everywhere, this was June. Just like what the guidebook says. Took the boat excursion & while atking photos, my cheap camera stopped to function but didn't let the feeling to annoy me in this beautiful medieval town.
Bought a disposable camera, well the one where you just throw them away when the films have all been used. Walking around the town & the Old Town was lively. Spent a good few hours in Bruges & took the next train to Ghent.
INFORMATION...
Between 12th & 15th centuries, Bruges was a prosperous cloth manufacturing town & it is near the Belgian Coast to the west..
Bruges is encased by an oval shape series of canals that connect the city's medieval fortifications.
Bruges also used to be called Venice of The North ! As the townsfolk used the canals from one point to another within Bruges.
So the story is told that during the 15th century, The Zwin (the so-called waterways) linking Bruges to the sea silted up hence the merchant shops wouldn't be able to reach the docks.
It was at the point in history that the economic decline of bruges started to silt up as well !
Antwerpen was quickly replaced hence slowly the townsfolk started to seek their fortune elsewhere.
Houses were abandoned; Streets were deserted; Canals were empty...
Bruges had been assleep for nearly 400 years !
In the 19th century, painters started to come here because of the peaceful ambience of this former merchant city, capturing the sights of the cobbled streets, the houses & the canals into canvas.
NOW, Bruges attracts nearly 2 millions tourists every year !
It is such a great place to wander around.
There are 2 squares in Bruges Centre :
The Markt
The Burg
The Markt has The Belfort (The Belfry); A large square which the first area that we arrived at. Now, the pedestrians, the shops & horse-drawn carriages dominated this area.
The Burg on the otherhand, has more shops & a very helpful Tourist Office. Medieval buildings can still beseen as well.
Bruges is a great day-out excursion from Brussels as trains are frequents between these 2 great Belgian cities.
Never forget to take the boat trip on The Canal !
Wander around on its cobbled streets; Watching the 'ole' buildings all over bruges will all be many highlights when visiting Bruges or Belgium for that matter...
- Pros:An Amazingly Beautiful Town in Belgium !
- Cons:Too Many Tourists During The Summer...
- In a nutshell:An Easy Day Excursion From Brussels !

I can totally relate to what you said about Brugge.....I fell in love there..... didn't wanna go back...heh!
Your pictures inspire me to visit Brugge soon. You seem to have the same outlook as I do on places - get away from the touristy bits.
Again you've managed to capture the spirit of a wonderful town... did you do those paintings? they are lovely.
