The name 'Schönbrunn' comes from the words 'schöner brunnen', meaning 'beautiful fountain.' This is also the name of this entire area of Vienna and the magnificent palace where it is situated in. It derives from a natural spring that the Emperor Mathias discovered in the early 17th century on this spot. A magnificent example of Viennese Baroque, Schönbrunn Palace was built in 1695 and completed five years later. The architect Fischer von Erlach attempted to design a royal residence that surpassed even Versailles. Financial and political problems interfered, and Schönbrunn was built on a scale slightly less grand. Nevertheless, it is a stunning palace set on a high hill with a view of practically all of Vienna and the surrounding vine-covered countrysides. The picture on the left is the view opposite the palace & we can see The Gloriette on the hill.

This is a baroque palace situated on the west of Vienna...& it's one of the most popular attractions in Vienna.
The interior of the palace is suitably majestic with frescoed ceilings, crystal chandeliers & gilded ornaments.....
PLEASE GO TO MY VIENNA TRAVELOGUES (SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM...) FOR SOME IMPRESSIVE PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE INTERIOR OF THE PALACE.
The fascination of the palace not only lies in the political & historic events which took place in Schonbrunn, but also in the appealing family intimacy with which it is associated:
Empress Maria Theresia with her numerous children; Mozart (then 6 years old!!...) played his first royal recital in The Mirror Room; the room decorations created by the members of the Imperial family; Emperor Franz Joseph & his austere office; his death during the first World War; the end of the monarchy in Austria...
When you visit Schönbrunn Palace, you will be able to tour about 40 out of the 1440 rooms. The interior is classic Rococo of the 18th century with a lot of red, white, and gold. You won't want to miss the view from the Gloriette, an observation platform at the very top of the hill with a spectacular panorama of Vienna. And you will want to spend some time wandering the beautiful Baroque park with its enormous formal flower beds, arbors, allegorical statuary, and lovely fountains. Here too you will find Tierpark, the oldest zoo in the world. Built in 1752 by Maria Theresa for her husband, Franz Stephan, the zoo is a lovely place to relax and enjoy observing the exotic animals.

This big wheel is situated in a large amusement park...often known as Volksprater or Wurstelprater...; at the western end of Prater District.
This huge Ferris Wheel is known to the world as Riesenrad.
It was built in 1897...
The wheel operates as late as midnight in summer....the fee is about € 4....

The park where the Riesenrad is situated, has all sorts of funfair rides, from gentle children merry-go-rounds to stomach-twisting big dippers!
Rides cost from Euro 1.10 to 4...
As you wander around the park, you will see some weird & twisted metal human sculptures.....as captured by my camera on the left.

I was impressed seeing the human figures standing with all kinds of positions...for almost long hours....
To get attention, to get some money...thrown by the spectators who will always be amused by their behaviours/endeavours...
To me, they are just part of the cultures in all over Europe....very colourful in their costumes, in their willingness to interpret the human behaviours, from the performing artists themselves & from the spectators' views...
From the photo, we can see St. Stephan's Cathedral at the back...

This is a Kunsthistorisches Museum, situated in Maria Theresien Platz.
It is one of the finest museums in Europe & should not be missed!!
The building is designed to reflect the works it displays, with older architectural styles faithfully reproduced.

This photos was taken on my last day in Vienna, thinking about all the places that I have been to for this 2nd trip to Europe....
Couldn't remember the name of the park....I was sitting on the bench, watching some joggers; people walking their dogs; parents walking with their babies....
Feeling good...feeling proud of myself !
...At the same time, I was thinking of home; my real habitat, my room....; the people that I missed....
So, this photo is the memories & feelings of that moment...
