EGILSSTADIR<<<<<MYVATN>>>>>AKUREYRI
ICELAND
22nd June 2004
I was in the area of Lake Myvatn for just about 30 minutes.
The bus was dropping off passengers & accepting new ones...
This was certainly not enough time for me to explore the area better.
Maybe also I was so keen to reach Akureyri (the so-called 'Urban Iceland'), hence neglecting the possibility of doing anymore Icelandic wilderness, at least on that day. Maybe...
Nik was no more with me...At least I still had Brian !
From the area where the bus was stopping, we couldn't deter which side or which part of Lake Myvatn that were at, that we were in.
Yes, we saw a lake allright & we even walked to it...
I told Brian that I thought Lake Myvatn would be inside a big volcanic crater !
The area that we were in was not...
Brian couldn't give me his comment either. First time he was there, his excuse...
Anyhow, took enough photos (not many) & walked back to the bus.
There's a hotel where the bus was stopping so I called up The Youth Hostel in Akureyri to book a bed.
The bus started to move...continued my journey to Akureyri.
The journey from Lake Myvatn to Akureyri was a real eye opener for me ! Some nice sceneries, we passed through...
I realised that the bus was not really stopping in the centre of attractions...
At first, they didn't really want to stop at Godafoss Waterfall !
They did after I asked them to...
The common sense explaination is :
The public buses on The Ring Road also work as 'sightseeing' buses for locals & tourists alike.
Everybody can hop on & hop off anywhere they like along The Ring Road.
These buses MUST stop at most major attractions around Iceland BUT if the weather or road conditions can cause the bus to slow down, hence reaching late at certain destinations.
For that result, the bus have to 'cut short' their stops...
WORST, if there's no passengers getting off at certain places, the buses WILL NOT stop there at all !
Hence, we blink an eye & we shall miss some beautiful sights...
As a tourist, this is our LOST !
Anyway, after some 'persuasiveness' the bus stopped at Godafoss waterfall, for me.
Actually only me got out from the bus ! Maybe some passengers were annoyed of me asking to be stopped as they all wanted to reach Akureyri ASAP...I dunno.
Anyway, nothing that I could capture from that 'few minutes only' stop at Godafoss Waterfall.
Nothing I could capture the splendour of this waterfall, also known as THE WATERFALL OF GOD !
Ran back to the bus as if, if I was late for a mili-second, the bus would leave without me !
On the bus, this was my feeling :
I was not sad, neither I was angry...
BUT I was tired.
I wanted to reach Akureyri too !
Like most of the passengers anyway, I was tired of seeing too much of the landscapes of Iceland.
I was tired of focussing my eyes through the lense of my cameras...
I wanted to reach Akureyri !
I wanted to re-new my zest of seeing Iceland !
I was pretty sure that Akureyri would rekindle back this zest ! I was cock sure !
Akureyri would definitely be different from these barren/larve landscapes that I had been seeing for the last few days...
10 rolls of my film would certainly prove that !
Thinking about Nik, would he manage to paddle away to Dettifoss Waterfall in the un-predictability of Icelandic weather ?
Thinking also about Siggi in Reykjavik; What would I tell him when he would ask me about the round trip; Would it worth it for me ?
I was thinking about home...I missed my room !
I was thinking about so many things...
Then, Brian said, "We Are In Akureyri NOW !".
I woke up from my day-dreaming...
Welcome me, Akureyri !
Welcome me...
