The Almost Elegant Trieste...

by coceng - last update: Feb 16, 2005

VERONA<<<<<TRIESTE>>>>>KOPER
ITALY
Thursday 19th June 2003
Life's a surprise they say & then it gets bland. Arrived in Trieste at 2 am, with no where to sleep I walked to the park. Why ? I saw a bench to lie down my sleepy & tired Asian body.
Funny thing in life happened on this beanch. I was awoken by a sprinkle of water...rain, I thought. Except it's not, it's the water sprinkler ( I did give the clue, the word 'sprinkler') watering the park. That was at 4 am.
Laughed myself out, out of the park & the train station. Why ? Well, to continue my sleep. Although I had to wait for 2 more hours when the door was opened & I searched the 'waiting room'. Many benches but I was not alone. Secured on a bench & chatted with a British couple who had the same fate of not finding a place to sleep. At least they were going somewhere & me, I waited for somebody.
Trieste, from Verona to Venice Mestre, then to Monfalcone. A bus to Trieste. The bus was included in the train ticket maybe not too many passengers on board the train, to Trieste so some wise man on earth thought it's more cost-saving to transport us by bus instead of train. I remember thinking on the bus that this journey was like a journey to the summer camp; train & bus. Except it's not because no bed waiting for me in Trieste.
Had a good hour exploring Trieste in the morning; Trieste is a port town with nice Habsburg styled buildings aplenty. Went up the hill for some Roman ruins, we are after all still in Italy.
Ivan, my Slovene host with a fisherman cap (could be a fisherman) came all the way from Ilirska Bistrica at 11 am. Felt sleepy but Ivan cheered me up by saying, "Let's go to the sea !" I said, "I am not going fishing...".
Ivan said, "We go for a swim !". OKEH.

A MUST SEE...

Trieste is a good town to explore ! It's also near The Dalmatian Coast, my favourite getaway coast (well, so far...).
Although I was in this town for just a brief few hours, but I think I saw the crucial parts of Trieste.
You can come here & explore for yourself or you can take a look of other members' Trieste pages.
At least on my page, I lay out my photos according to these pages :
PAGE 1 : From Trieste Train Station, I walked to Borgo Teresiano, passing through Canal Grande.
I didn't waste any time in reaching another good spot - San Giusto Hill where there are some scenic views over Trieste !
There are some Roman ruins in this area as well...
PAGE 2 : Some of the ruins that I saw, as I took photos of them, were The Roman Arena at the foot of San Giusto Hill.
From there, I walked back to The Train Station where my friend would be waiting for me. On the way, I passed Piazza Unità d'Italia where there are Habsburg era buildings still stood beautifully...

ORIENTATION...
Trieste sits between The Adriatic Sea & Slovenia.
Trieste has the architectures from the era of Astro-Hungarian Empire dated from 18th to 19th centuries !
Croatians & Slovenes come here for some good shoppings !
Hence, we can make Trieste as our base to explore some parts of Croatia & Slovenia.
By Train : Hourly to Venice; Rome - twice daily; Naples - twice daily; There's also 1 train daily from Budapest & Ljubliana...

Arnaud, fabulous photos here. The stone bank at Venice-Mestre looks kind of uncomfy for a short nap ...*verybigsmile*
