DAMASCUS<<<<<BOSRA>>>>>UM QAIS (JORDAN) SYRIA16th April 2005 ( Saturday ) On this day, in the morning I was in Damascus. Couldn't really sleep the previous night because there's a gang bang party in the next dormitory ! from the hotel, took a taxi to Baramke Terminal. Asked a driver for a bus to Bosra. Was told that the next bus would be at 10 am (at that time it was at 8.50 am). It could be a lie ! Anyhow, the driver said I could go to Der'a, then catch a connection to Bosra. I decided to follow his advise anyhow because I could put my luggage at Der'a then take a bus to see Bosra for a few hours, then back to Der'a to cross the border to Jordan. Good idea ! Arrived in Der'a at about 11 am; Asked to put my big luggage. Again, being a Malaysian helped ! People said, "Ahh ! Our friend !". Fine by me they called me this as long as they didn't toss anything for me to buy ! I was led to a building, just next to the bus station; It's a building where the taxi/bus drivers getting their passports stamped before transporting passengers to Jordan. I opened my luggage to let them see that I didn't have anything dangerous in my luggage. Showed them my passport so that they knew I was a 'valid' traveller & not an illegal immigrant in Syria nor in Jordan. Next, bought something to eat...a schwarma & something to drink ! Then, minutes later, I was on the service to Bosra. I wanted to be dropped in the town itself instead of infront of The Roman Theater. The Bosra town almost like a shanty town, a cowboy town ! People & kids scattered all over. No problem for me at all as nobody tossed to sell anything to me (not yet rather...). Could see the Roman ruins almost everywhere, scattered all over near The Roman Theater, an amazing sight really ! Walking towards The Roman Theater, quite impressive as it's one of the best-preserved Roman theaters in the world ! Suddenly, I heard a big noise ! Cheering & jeering ! So loud I thought it could be a football match with Beckham running naked through the field or something ! Then I saw the crowds ! No, I didn't see Beckham, neither Victoria...but I did see some guys wearing Beckham shirts though ! CONTINUE... |
INFORMATION... Bosra also known as Bosra Ash-Sharm; During the 1st Century AD, Bosra was the capital of The Nabatean Kingdom. Then it was known as Buhora & later Bustra during The Hellenistic period. During the 6th century, the largest cathedral in this region was built here. After the decline of the Roman Empire, Bosra played a significant role in the history of early Christianity. It was also linked to the rise of Islam, when a Nestorian monk called Bahira met the young Prophet Mohammad when he was passing through this city. There's even a mosque called Al-Mabrak Mosque, which is said to have been erected on site where the Prophet's camel stopped to rest. NOW, the Bosra town lies in the middle of the ruins themself ! The most impressive are The Citadel & The Roman Ampitheater ! It was regarded as the most beautiful Roman ampitheater in the world ! Many guidebooks mentioned about to be lost in the dark rooms & the fortress halls in this theater ! The theater was built in the 2nd century AD & it could seat nearly 15,000 people. The Citadel which surrounds The Theater was built in stages. The first walls were set up during The Umayyad & The Abbasid periods. Further constructions were going on until the 11th century during The Fatimids period. More towers were built in the years 1202 to 1251. The result would be the 8 towers that we could see now, encircling the theater. In our time now, there would be concerts & dramas held in this theater... |
