CRAC DES CHEVALIERS<<<<<DAMASCUS>>>>>BOSRA SYRIA14th April 2005 ( Thursday ) First Day : On this day it was hectic for me ! In the morning I was in Palmyra, then a bus back to Homs; In Homs, rushed to Krak des Chevaliers, then back to Homs. About 4 pm, had to take the bus to Damascus ! I wanted to spend the night in Damascus instead of in Homs which is just a transport hub so I was told. Damascus at night would be nice I thought... Arriving in Damascus, I could feel the 'vibrant' of the city ! Like WOW ! The oldest inhabited city in the world ! Grand... The bus from Homs dropped me at a bus station, dunno the name. A guy approched me asking where would I wanted to go. I said the name of my hotel. I also made clear to him how much I wanted to pay him, so no hassle from him. I think he's not really a taxi driver because he didn't drive a taxi ! It was nonetheless a pleasant talk with as he said he was doing the job to earn extra money ! I asked him what was his job actually, he just laughed. I think he's a lecturer type... Anyway, reaching my hotel was easy. No, not a warm welcome as most guidebooks claimed. No problem for me. I'm a nobody anyway. I checked in & the guy led me to a room. As we climbed up the stairs, he said if it's okay if he put me in the same dormitory with a female traveller ? I asked him why ? He said I could change if I wanted to. I said no problem. Outside the room, there were some guys...European guys & a New Zealand guy but he's Asian. They exclaimed, "Oh NO ! Not another male tourist !" I said well, we could switch place if you want ! Maybe you get the girl for the night ! They laughed out loud ! EVERYBODY took me literally ! The hotel asked me to choose which guy I would 'give' the girl to ? I chose the New Zealand guy ! NOW, let me tell you readers something ! I do not have any problem with female travellers but I didn't like the vibe in that place ! It was so full of male travellers who came to Damascus just for the purpose or getting laid ! The New Zealand guy didn't wait anytime at all to switch to the other dormitory...The hotel guy asked me to wait because he had to tidy the bed by the Asian guy. After my bed was tidied up, I quickly put down my luggage & left the room. Let those guys daydreaming of which _bitch_ that they were going to _fuck_ that night ! CONTINUE... |
INFORMATION... Damascus is the capital city of Syria. Damascus is also considered as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world ! Its current population is estimated at 2 million people. It is about 80 km from The Mediterranean Sea & 145 km from Jerusalem. From many historical sources, Damascus could first be inhabited as early as 8,000 to 10,000 years BC ! The Barada River which flows through Damascus gives this ancient city a life. Many civilizations have left their marks over the centuries : The Aramean, The Greek, The Roman, The Byzantines, The Mongols, The Ottomans, The Arabs... Even Alexander The Great made his impression here ! Even the word 'Dimashq' has been disputed to derived from these conquerors. In Malaysia, my country...Damascus is called Damshiq. Some important sites around Damascus : The Umayyad Mosque The Azem Palace The National Museum Hamidiyya Souqs or Bazaar The Christian Quater A Street Called Straight... There are 2 distinct parts of Damascus. The Old Town The Surrounding Areas. The Old Town looks well, old...& almost unkept. The New Town has The Museum, busy & noise of traffic. The surrounding area notably the small mountain called Jebel Qassioun, would give us a good view over Damascus City ! A sight not to be missed especially during sunset ! |
