LEBANON
6th April 2005 ( Wednesday )

INFORMATION

It is about 50 km south-east of Beirut.
This palace is situated in the village with the same name was a strong-hold of the 18th century governor by the name of Emir Bashir.
The styles incorporated into this palace is a criss-cross of traditional Arab & Italian baroque as the architects were Italians !
This palace was built over the period of 30 years.
The name Beiteddine means 'House of Faith', built on an ancient Druze site.
This palace was suffered huge losses during the Israeli invasion as many treasures (nearly 90% !) were gone forever either by bombings of thefts !
After 1984, the Druze leader called Walid Jumblatt began its restoration & he also declared it to be 'The Palace For The People'.
Now, it contains 3 main courts :
The Outer Courtyard - Free for visitors
The Central Courtyard - The guards & the administration office
The Private Family Quater - There would be good displays of items after the restoration
In the lower part of this palace, there are good displays of Byzantine-era mosaics this side of The Mediterranean.
The Beiteddine Palace can be visited as a day trip from Beirut, by hiring a taxi.
The public transports reaching here is a bit tricky so ask around on how to get back to Beirut...
