INFORMATION Tripoli is called as Trablous in Arabic; It is about 85 km north of Beirut. It is Lebanon's 2nd largest city. It is also a main port & a trading centre for Northern Lebanon. There are 2 parts of Tripoli : The Old Town The Modern Town The Old City dates back from the 14th & 15th centuries, during The Mamluks era. It is filled up with alleyways, the souqs, hammams (bath houses) & mosques. There's an old world feel about Tripoli as there are many monuments in this town or some sights are just simply neglected with moss-covered & crumbling walls. The Citadel of Raymond De Saint-Gilles is a huge fortress perched on a hill (called Mt. Pilgrim...) that shouldn't be missed while in Tripoli. In Arabic, it's called as Qala'at Sanjil. It started in AD 1102 but was burnt down in 1289. Some historians also claim that soap was invented here in Tripoli ! It might well be true as there are/were many hammams (bath houses...) in Tripoli, frequently visited in ancient times as well as our time now... |
