'AJLUN<<<<<JERASH>>>>>AMMAN JORDAN17th April 2005 ( Sunday ) Jerash is one of best attractions in Jordan ! An area so vast, you could walk the area for 1 whole day ! Me, well enough for 2 to 3 hours ! Reaching here from Ajlun by a taxi. The taxi driver even stopped for a while so that I could take some photos of Ajlun Castle looming over the mountain... The Journey From 'Ajlun To Jerash... In Jerash, he dropped me at the ticket counter. It was wise for him to do so. NOW, the ticket counter to the main entrance of the ruins is quite a walk away ! Luckily for me, I also managed to find a place to put my luggage. This guy who's selling a souvenir said he could help me putting the luggage at his shop; Well, you know the story as maybe he wanted me to buy his souvenir later...Did I buy anything from him ? Read on ! I bought schwarmas so that I could chew them in the ruins...That would be just nice I thought ! After paying for the ticket, I walked & walked. Until I reached the entrance, gave the ticket & I was inside the ruins right away ! What a mega ruin site ! It's so vast ! I looked at my watch...& convinced myself that, "I could DO this !" Arriving in Jerash about 12 pm, I had to reach Amman by 5 pm. Around the ruins, I walked, I wandered...I took photos; I felt so good ! Seeing the ruins with my own eyes ! Many tourists as well. The ruins are impressive ! There are hills surrounded the ruins but there are people's houses as well on those hills. I was thinking that if there's no proper city plannings, then these ruins would be lost forever ! I chose the best spot to eat my tasty schwarmas; Inside one of the temples. There's also somebody selling coffee there. A Dutch woman approached me for a chat...That was nice. She arranged the teapots/flasks so that she could take a photo of them. I took a chance as well. So the photo as you can see it up there, as my main photo of my Jerash page. About 4 pm, I'd better leave. The Dutch woman wanted to leave later; She wanted to wander around Jerash town, Sorry that I couldn't be with her. Walked back to the ticket office, collected my luggage & bought a few postcards from the guy who took care of my luggage. Took a service taxi to Amman... |
INFORMATION... Known as Gerasa, one of the 10 cities in The Decapolis. It is 51 km from Amman, Jordan's capital. The northern Jordan is the most populated region of the country. The major centres are Irbid & Jerash. The ruins in Jerash is one of the most impressive in Jordan as it is regarded as the best example of a Roman provincial city in The Mediterranean. Gerasa reached its peak in the 3rd century. By the middle of the 5th century, Christianity was the major religion. In 614, Gerasa was invaded by The Persian & The Muslims conquered it in 636. A devastating earthquake shook Gerasa in 747. In this time, Gerasa's went down in decline... The Crusaders made it its garrison in the 12th century & left deserted until The Circassians from Russia arrived here in 1878. Soon after, the site's archeological importance was realised & excavations started ever since that... |
There are many great ruins or monuments still can be seen in Jerash. Particularly : Hadrian's Arch; A circus/ hippodrome; Two immense temples, each to Zeus and Artemis; The unique Oval Piazza with a fine colonnade around it; A long colonnaded street; Two theatres (the Large South Theatre and smaller North Theatre); Two baths; Plus a scatter of small temples & an almost complete circuit of city walls, mostly in ruins. Jerash is best visited from Amman (Abdali Bus Station), the journey would take around 1 1/4 hours. Sound & Light show is also held here in the Jerash ruins everyday except on Friday. This city also hosts The Jerash Festival every year since 1981. The festival is held for 17 days from July to August. It features poetries readings, plays, opera & musical concerts. |
