Melaka is a historical state ! It was occupied by the Portugese in the 17th century & the by the Dutch in the 18th century ! It was the biggest port then, Melaka. Now, we can see the remnants of those long gone era... On the 5th of March, 2004...I went down to Melaka Town with my Slovene friend Ivan; Just sort of returning my visit to his country Slovenia. We took a bus from KL...the journey took 2 hours. Once arrived, we bought the bus tickets back to KL. Prefered to walk from the bus station to the Historical Zone because we could 'absorb' the Melakan air better that way.
Melaka started it all, I could say... It has that sentimental, deja vu, experiences...longing to come out from the shell...kind of feelings for me ! I was about 15 or 16 went coming to this town from Masjid Tanah 25 km away... Went to the boarding school in Melaka Town. At the weekends, I used to come down (as we said it then, come down...) to Melaka Town & there were lots of tourists then ! I talked with them ! Exchanged tapes with them & I really owe my indie music listening to them all ! Took them to the historical monuments & places...Accompanied them to the bus stations or their hotels ! Walking with them I felt good ! Thinking that one day I would be like them, travelling places...discovering places...meeting people... Ahhh ! Those were the days ! Seeing Melaka now is not the same...The buildings are unkept ! Still filled with people, the Melakan...& tourists (though not as many as before...). New buildings, mostly shopping complexes & restaurants are kinda scattered around...Some over-head bridges are missing. And then, the Melaka River,...muddy & not as dirty as before.
So, I took Ivan to this place ! Wanted him to know about my childhood/teenage angst ? Nah... Although Ivan would fond of me better now I think, not sure. Okay, without further ado (about nothing), take a peek...take a look of the photos that I took around Melaka... These are just some glimpses, we didn't have the time to walk further, we didn't have the time to enter Mahkota Parade even ! Come here if you are in KL ! It has some extra things that you couldn't find in KL... |
Picture on the right : The abandoned houses by the river...The abandoned boat by the river. The reflections of it all in the river... This is Melaka river, which bears lots of stories along the centuries & maybe some say, treasures...still stucked at the bottom of the river ! |
Picture on the left : A creature...in the muddy river bank of Melaka River ! It's not a fish, looks more amphibean than a reptile. There are everywhere on the river bank ! They could swim the dark muddy river, they breed in the river. They could also crawl out maybe to take some air... Weird creature !...And NO, we don't eat them ! |

bpacker Mon Jul 25, 2005 07:29 UTC You're right about the armenian tombstone. I found out that the messages on them can be quite funny. | diocletianvs Mon Mar 28, 2005 10:14 UTC Interesting to see all these colonial influences in Asia. Melaka looks very colorful, I especially liked trishaws - they look most authentic in my opinion. Thanks for sharing the Melaka experience. | matcrazy1 Fri Sep 24, 2004 17:22 UTC Amzing pictures and interesting destination, I see. | cheekymarieh Sat Sep 4, 2004 19:57 UTC Some great photos. They bring back memories if my trip there two years ago. |
