I am not a tourist, I am primarily a business traveler. Having said that, I am adventurous and I am in good enough shape to walk for hours, therefore, my primary approach to a new city is to walk (if it is safe!) Get a city map (most decent hotels have one, also ask the concierge if the area is safe). One note, if you are American, people know it. You will not blend in. Locals will notice your shoes, your socks (we are the only ones that wear half-socks), clothes (we do not dress as well as most countries, regardless of levels of affluence. Having said all that, I have had the pleasure of "walking" many of the great cities of the world! Paris, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rome....I am pretty lucky.
As I get older, I am more prone to flying and going straight to work, but the other side of this is I seldom leave the country for less than one week, that means a weekend! Given a choice, Munich is a favorite weekend destination while in Europe; Buenos Aires is my South American favorite, but I have had great weekends in many other cities also.
My approach to my homepage will be to cover red tape first, then locales, restaurants, hotels and other stuff as it seems pertinent. |
