Favourite resting place of Budapestians. The island in the middle of Danube between 2 bridges - Margit hid and Arpad hid.
The island got its name in honour of Szent Margit, who is probably the main Hungarian Saint. She was a King Bela's IV daughter. During Turkish siege she sweared that if Hungarian wothstood she would become a nun. Hungarians did and she also kept her promise. She was living in the monastery on Margit Sziget, the renmants of which are still there and her grave, where even now there are flowers.
Apart of the historic facts, Margit Sziget offers plenty of attractions, like open air pool withy water activities, casino, bars, restaurants, discos, even small zoo, and plenty of others. Budapestians and city visitors simply come there to spend a week-end, lying on the grass and sunbathing, playing football or tennis, cycling, etc.
One of the attractions is the musical fontain, which is vbery beautiful. Accompanied by the classic music, it gives the beautiful water show to the spectators.
There are small cars to rent, or bycicles. Prices vary depending on the size and time : from 600Ft to 3000Ft (2,5€ - 12€) per hour.
