I spent 3 nights and two days in Jordan in June, 2001. I visited Petra on my first full day in Jordan and then spent a day and a night in Wadi Rum with a Bedouin guide and two couples, one from France and one from Australia. My vocabulary becomes limited in trying to describe Petra: I keep using the word "magnificent" repeatedly. Let me try this. I spoke to people who have seen the pyramids of Egypt. They said that while the pyramids were grand, they were only single, solitary structures. At best they existed in small groups. Their opinion was that the effect of the architecture and scale of Petra surpasses the effect of the pyramids. My personal point of view was this: I have never seen human-made structures that had such an over-awing effect on my senses.
