Getting TO/AROUND: 08Jan2004 (Thur). I flew from Hong Kong to Bangkok to Chiang Mai with the Orient Thai Airline, the transit in Bangkok was a complete nightmare! I had only 30 minutes for the transit move, without any signs, instructions nor helping staff. I literally had to run through the terminals to make the connecting flight. Even computer at the airport do not have information about this connecion flight from Bangkok to Chiangmai!!! I finally arrived in Chiang Mai with 2 hours delay, but my rucksack did not.

Getting TO/AROUND: The most common public transportation is "song thaew" which means the Red Taxi. Song Thaew is a pickup truck converted for carrying passengers and some cargo. These vehicles are regulated and licensed by the government. In Chiang Mai, red song thaews roam the city and are free to travel anywhere. Simply wave your hand, stop one, and ask told the driver where you ant to go before boarding. Fare within the city is nomally 10 Baht, to airport 20 Bhat. Prices negotiable for longer distances.

I really liked your restaurant tips! Eating local food is a great part of travelling :-) The jungle trek sounds like fun, but 3 hours on a raft like that sure sounds like loooong time!

Since you went to Changmai, have you been in Ma Hong Son? There are more jungle activities!

Great pages Virginia. I did a similar trek last year but my bamboo rafting only lasted 30 mins. 3 hours! how did you cope. I might check Libra guesthouse out this summer. Thanks again for very useful tips! jon

Good tips! The bamboo rafting looks a bit scary...
