My stay there was brief and revolved more around the guy I was seeing who was staying there, as I lived in NYC at the time. The building is beautiful and the view from our room was of Central park, room 1621 as I recall. The plaza is currently closed but scheduled to re-open in 2007 – see below for more info.
The building is beautiful and grand in stature. You have seen its exterior and interior in more movies than most other Hotels. The lobby is lined with marble and dark wood that oozed class as well as crystal chandeliers. It really is a site to see.
The staff was welcoming and very helpful. The room we stayed in was small but served its purpose. The bathroom was very nice and the shower was fantastic. I have thick hair so a good shower head makes all the difference. One of the biggest perks of The Plaza is location. You are across the street from Central Park, Tiffany's and other fabulous shopping is but blocks away and if you ever get lost… most people know where it is located.
The Plaza also offered the Palm Court Restaurant were you could get a spot of tea (traditional high tea) and some finger sandwiches. It’s a Mecca for all little girls that read the Eloise books (drawn by Knight). The Plaza and Palm were her home. For those that have been there you have most likely passed through the lobby and run across Eloise. The painting is being taken care of but I don’t know that she will return at the grand opening.
From what I understand The Plaza is currently closed for a make-over and partial conversion to condos. This landmark building (1969) will go from 805 hotel rooms to a mere 348 rooms and 200 condominiums. They say that they are keeping the Terrace Room and Grand Ballroom. Both will benefit from an overdue TLC session and should look like new once opened sometime in 2007.
Unique Qualities: Although the new floorplans look like the hotel rooms will face an alley, the condo's will have the Central Park views that the building is know for.
