(Picture by Miguel Lacerda) Aveiro, Venice in Portugal (well... It's not the Venice, but it's very nice) is a city that once was a great seaport with a history linked to its salt pans dating back prior to 959AD. Much later, in the 16th Century it acquired new prosperity through its cod fishing industry practised off the coast of Newfoundland. Unfortunately, very strong storms occurred... some physical... some political... the economic war with Japan and Russia and the new "ecological" policy of Canada made the great seaport transform in a phantom port... it's nice to think ecologic... but not when people stay without a job and alternative specially those that used to fish almost in an artesian way... the mechanized fleets of other countries continue the fishing... ... Well... the world is a belvedere... just wait and see all these political games behind ecological names... Meanwhile... Aveiro stayed with its canales and with some sidewalks near. There, we can walk or sit an see the calming water flowing... |
