Singapore was founded 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles, an official of the British East India Company. Singapore became a fully independent and sovereign nation on 9 August 1965. Singapore became a member of the United Nations on 21 September 1965. Singapore has roughly 4.5 million citizens.
Singapore is an independent country consisting of one city called Singapore on the main island. The main island is 24 km in width and 42 km in length and around it are some 63 offshore islands.
Singapore's immediate neighbours are Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia to the North, Sarawak and Sabah to the East), Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia.
Being very close to the Equator, approximately 137 kilometres north of the Equator, Singapore's climate is characterised by abundant rainfall, relatively uniform temperature and high humidity throughout the year. December is the coolest month of the year while May is the warmest.

The colours of the Singapore flag represent red for brotherhood and equality; white for purity and virtue. The crescent moon originally served as a symbol of assurance to the Malays in 1959 —the year the flag was designed— that Singapore was not a Chinese state. Today it is generally said that the moon signified a young nation rising.
