Amsterdam, is a beguiling capital, a compact mix of the provincial and the cosmopolitan. It is a small city, although the concentric canal system can be confusing initially, an easy way to find your way around. At its core lies Dam Square, the local point of the medieval town which fans south from Central Station, one of Amsterdam's most redolent landmarks. The city's streets are filled with herring stands, flower stalls, outdoor art markets, open-air cafes, and throngs of bicyclists. |
The capital of the Netherlands Amsterdam is located in the Province of North Holland, in the north west of the country. A lively, liberal and vibrant city, Amsterdam covers an area of 207 sq. km (80 sq. miles) and is populated by around 730,000 inhabitants. Known as the Venice of the North, Amsterdam is built on ninety islands linked by four hundred stone bridges across sixty-two miles of canals, which fan out from the heart of the old city and, as a result it is relatively quiet, with little traffic.
The Dutch seat of government (along with, incidentally, the Queen's official residence) is not located in Amsterdam but in The Hague. However, Amsterdam is, without question, the country's cultural, historical and commercial hub. The city is famous for its seventeenth and eighteenth-century gabled houses that line the waterways and, of course, as a center for the diamond trade.
