Located in East Asia, Hong Kong Island is 32km (20 miles) east of the mouth of Pearl River and 135km (84 miles) southeast of Canton. It is separated from the mainland by a good natural harbour. Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1842 by the Treaty of Nanking; and the Kowloon Peninsula (south of Boundary Street and Stonecutters Island) in 1860 by the Convention of Peking. The area of Boundary Street to Shenzhen River and a group of 260 islands, now known as the New Territories, were leased to Britain in 1898 for a period of 99 years. The New Territories (plus the 260 islands) comprise 891 sq km (380 sq miles). Shortage of land suitable for development has led to reclamation from the sea, principally from the seafronts of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

Hong Kong, the city of lights... Hong Kong Island or known as Harbour in Chinese, is visually stunning. The Central area is filled with an astonishing array of skyscrapers that peer down on a contradictory mix of the materialistic and the spiritual.
Victoria, the capital city of Hong Kong Island is a vibrant city with its sophisticated and metropolitan lifestyle.
Sharing the incredibly congested space with the financial institution and shopping centres are public housing blocks. Real estate costs in Hong Kong are expressed by the number of thousand dollars to each square foot.
To avid shoppers, Hong Kong has everything in abundance, from the open air markets to classy malls. For bargain-hunters looking for great deals and great ambience, just head over to Ladies' Market, Temple Street Night Market and other open air bazaars. There are great and classy malls that offer international brand names. Sales usually fo with season, especially the summer and winter sales, where shopping is an exhilarating experience for all.
