For an unforgettable, eerie adventure, visit the three Waitomo Caves south of Hamilton on the North Island. Those are not stalactites hanging from the ceiling - they're thousands of luminescent glowworms. Ride the tour boats through the Waitomo Cave, visit the Museum of Caves, or (if you're feeling adventurous) try rappelling or "black-water" rafting in the Ruakuri Cave. Rafters don wet suits and miner's helmets to float through the glowworm caves and down a small waterfall. The more understated Aranui Cave does have thousands of tiny stalactites.
Waitomo Caves with glitering glow worms, ancient stalagmites and stalactites have left me fascinated.
I chose to do the lost world cave which was a 100m abseil and caving adventure. Sure was a great trip !
