Queenstown is an exhilarating, year round, alpine resort, perfect for adventurers and leisure seekers alike.
Set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu is a popular destination in both summer and winter. In winter the town is a mecca for skiers and in summer it attracts those adrenalin seekers looking for adventure with bungy jumping, white water rafting, jetboating, skydiving, abseiling and a host of other activities not for the faint-hearted.
Queenstown offers relaxation at its best. There is gold in them there hills, and trout in the streams, so try your hand with a gold pan or a fishing rod.
Queenstown's reputation as the adventure capital of the world is well earned, you can choose to join in or watch the massive selection of safe, breath-taking activities. Earth, water or air, there is something to test and thrill all adventure seekers.

Queenstown is in the centre of the South Island, about 3/4 of the way down. It rests 310 metres above sea level in the Southern Alps beside the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Lake Wakatipu is New Zealand's 3rd largest lake and deeper than sea level at 335 metres deep.

history... Maori legend says Lake Wakatipu was formed by a taniwha (giant) felled in the rescue of a beautiful wahine (woman) kidnapped by the taniwha. The rhythmic rise and fall of the lake is the taniwha's heart still beating. Geological history says the lake and surrounding landscape were formed by an ice age as recent as 14,000 years ago.
