Known as the "City Above the Clouds" ... at an elevation of 8,465 feet above sea level is Teller County's most populated city, (6,515 citizens according to the 2000 census) a big resource stop-off heading West and East on Highway 24 through the mountains, is a 5.7 mile square town called "Woodland Park". Surrounded by the one-million acre woodland known as Pike National Forest, the town is only 17 miles west of Colorado Springs. On the west end of Town is the gateway to Ute Pass and the Rockies approximately 12 miles away along Highway 24. Notorious for its sights, views, hiking, climbing, and fishing - Woodland Park is a mecca for outdoor recreationist and a big supply stop. Often snow-spotted or covered with daytime winter temperatures often below freezing, yet a temperature and bearable winter location. The area is known for its music and art festivals, many of which are held at the Ute Cultural Center. The Town is also popular for the "Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center".
