Colorado Springs - Defensive Fortress of America Visitors to Pikes Peak find a welcoming vacation here in Colorado Springs and neighbouring Manitou Springs. This pleasant small city hosts clean air, sunshine, a range of mountainous landscapes, culture, and history. Birthed from historic "Colorado City", Colorado Springs was born out of Gen. William J. Palmer's 'playground for the wealthy' as a stop-off for his Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1871. Soon miner's and miller's took over, and a town boomed. After the 20th century, the city turned into a massive military center with North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) built into the heart of Cheyenne Mountain as the defensive center for America during Desert Storm; then the Air Force Academy, Fort Carson Army Base, Peterson Air Force Base, and US Space Command. |
