Kerak has a spectacular castle high on a clifftop, with great views towards the Dead Sea and Israel. The town is nice enough, if a little dull, but the people are friendly and it is not visited by many visitors during the winter months. Because it was winter, we managed to stay in Kerak's top hotel for a fraction of the normal price - they decided that to have one guest paying low prices was better than having an empty hotel. kerak is also the starting point for the spectacular King's Highway which is not served by public transport in the same way thet the other north-south route is. Hitch-hiking is the only real option of travelling this route, although there are some very decrepit minibuses which run between some of the smaller villages - you just have to be lucky to be in the right place at the right time! It's best to start early as there is nowhere to stay between Kerak and Madaba.
