In Tbilisi at least, there are plenty of restaurants, Georgian and foreign, but the best place to enjoy Georgian cooking is in private homes. It is amazing that even the poorest family would not think twice about inviting a foreigner into their home and providing enough food to feed five thousand. Not to mention all the wine/vodka/cognac and toasting which accompanies any meal...
Favorite Dish: The food in Georgia is delicious...it has influences from Turkey and Iran, and of course Russia, but remains unique. The quintessential Georgian dish is the Khachapuri, which is bread filled with cheese...there are several varieties, and the best is Ajaruli Khachapuri (from the Ajara region around Batumi) which is a boat shaped 'pizza' with an egg added just before serving....and it is very messy (or at least the way I ate it was!). Khinkali is also famous in the region, and is a sort of dumpling filled with pork/beef mince meat...the trick is to eat it without spilling the juices (not easy at all!). Many dishes include walnut and garlic,( e.g aubergines stuffed with walnut and garlic, tomatoes stuffed with walnuts and gar.....). During the 4 weeks I spent in Georgia, I tried many home-cooked dishes, but I cannot remember their names (either because I had too much to drink that night, or because the names are unpronounceable to everyone but Georgians!) The food is tasty and spicy without being too hot (I mean chilli hot, not temperature hot).
