Tynemouth Travel Guide: 28 reviews and 101 photos

Many moons ago, I created a travelogue of the Tyneside coastline, so if you care to hop over to my Newcastle-upon-Tyne page, you'll find more info about Tynemouth there...

Back to the present....Tynemouth...well, it is one of my favourite seaside destinations in this area. Just a short metro ride from Newcastle city centre, it doesn't feel like you are still in a huge city. Whitley Bay and Cullercoats to the north, South Shields across the Tyne to the south...they have beaches too, but Tynemouth stands out because it has much more character.

The main street has lots of quirky shops, including a "shopping centre" inside a church (the Land of Green Ginger, whatever that's supposed to mean), a couple of Victorian era hotels, some good pubs and restaurants...

So, Tynemouth has a beach...and a nice town centre...

What about a ruined priory on a clifftop?

Yes, it has one of those too...admittedly, you do have to hand over large sums of money to English Heritage in order to get a true feel for the place, but cheapskates can admire Tynemouth's Priory and Castle from outside, either from the beach or the pier.
