Well, Trieste was a surprise! Although I had read lots of pages on VT all singing the praises of this port city in the north-east corner of Italy, my overall expectations of the place were based on my memories of passing through on the train five years ago. Back then, Trieste from the rails seemed to comprise of cranes, factories and mist...at the time, we were fairly glad we hadn't decided to include the city on our trip as an overnight stop. In fact, if it hadn't been for Ryanair's ridiculously cheap flights, and the fact that Trieste is a very convenient gateway to Slovenija, I probably would not have given the city a second thought. Instead of an uninteresting, industrial, nondescript port, Trieste turned out to be a thoroughly nice place...grand buildings, roman ruins, a hilltop castle, narrow twisting lanes, a picturesque canal, and a beautiful stretch of coastline with great sunset views. Trieste must be one of the most under-rated cities in Europe...the reason maybe lies in its location, just an hour from Venezia, meaning that most people bypass Trieste en route to its much more famous cousin. Of course, you can't really compare the two cities...Venice is much more stunning, but Trieste should not be overlooked. There is more than enough to see and do in the city and its surroundings...who needs Venice and its crowds when you have a fascinating Italian/Slavic city almost empty of tourists (well, foreign tourists anyway) just down the road?!

i really want to visit this city - but i don't want to stay at that youth hostel! btw i love thos slovene voweless places like Krk - I didn't know Trst had no vowels either.

Actually the correct name is "Palazzo Gopcevic" and who built it was serbian.

Michael, I coudn't agree more with the idea of "getting lost" to see better. Italian cities seem to be perfect for this. Thanks for the page.
