"Makthar" Maktar by maykal

Maktar Travel Guide: 28 reviews and 101 photos

Makthar town is a strange place. The Maktaris Hotel even stranger. Above the town's only bar, climbing the stairs to the hotel through the back of the bar does make you feel as if you are doing something very risque in Tunisia, but luckily it wasn't that sort of establishment...just very rustic.

Roman Makthar is spectacular, what with its hillside setting, local women in colourful dresses picking the dandelions in between munching sheep, arches and columns and bits of mosaic all over the place...and not a single other tourist there.

More to say later....but here...have some mosaics!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Hilltop town with extensive Roman ruins, fairly unvisited, dramatic scenery in and around town
  • Cons:Cold at night...and Makthar's only hotel may not be suitable for single women
  • In a nutshell:Roman ruins in mountainous surroundings...very different to typical image of Tunisia
