First impressions tend to stick in my mind, and unfortunately I was not enamoured with the city on arrival. Being overcharged by a taxi driver ($2 for a two minute ride!!!), quoted ridiculous prices for very down-at-heel hotels, and having a bit of a run-in with security did nothing to promote El Obeid to me. Once we'd found a cheap hotel charging reasonable prices, and spoken to the friendly Southern Sudanese owner, things started to get better. Exploring the town, we found the largest cathedral in Sudan, a free and fascinating museum, and a large, interesting souq, so the place appeared not to be too bad. However, after being overcharged a couple more times, El Obeid left a bitter taste in my mouth. |

| Pros: | "Enough to keep an avid sightseer busy for a day" | | Cons: | ""khawaja = guroosh kateer" mentality of many locals" | | In A Nutshell: | "I'm sure it is a very nice place, but overcharging me to enjoy it is not going to win it any prizes from me!" |
