Follow the White Nile south of Khartoum and after a few miles, you'll come to a "mountain" (rocky outcrop would be more exact, but this is flat Khartoum!) and a whopping great dam. The mountain is Jebel Awliya, and the dam is a favourite recreation area for the city folk downstream. There isn't much there, even less during Ramadan, but it is a great place to escape the chaos of the city for a few hours. |
