"Dongola" Dunqulah by maykal

Dunqulah Travel Guide: 6 reviews and 9 photos

Needing to leave Khartoum in a bit of a hurry (problems with landlord and school!) and Kassala not being ready to receive us just then, we decided to "make tourism", as the Sudanese say, and headed north to Dongola. After being severely bumped around on the desert bus, we arrived a little dishevelled in this tiny city on the western bank of the Nile, surrounded by palm groves. We'd come in search of ruins, having heard that there were plenty old temples and castles strewn along the river banks for kilometres around, but actually we only spotted one from a bus. Nevertheless, Dongola proved to be a very worthwhile destination for a pre-Christmas getaway, even if it did get a little chilly at times.

I have a lot of friends whose families came from Dongola to settle and work in Khartoum. I now understand why... I'm heading north at the weekend, insha'allah but only as far as the town of Meroe and jebal Barkal,
