The main sight in Aleppo is the huge citadel which lies atop a muddy pile of earth slap bang in the centre of the city. You can't fail to miss it, as it dominates the skyline. The entrance is probably the most impressive part, with its bridge and gatehouse stretching across the empty moat. Inside, there is an amphitheatre, a hammam, a mosque, and most importantly, a cafe to escape the rain if you happen to be unlucky like me. The views from the walls would have been nice if only the clouds had drifted elsewhere and the fog lifted!

Aleppo's famous souqs are fascinating to explore, and this was one area in which I didn't mind getting lost. In some alleys, donkeys have right of way, transporting goods to shops deep in the domed maze. The low ceilings make the souqs much more intimate than the ones in Damascus...I think this is possibly the only place where, for me, Aleppo scores over Damascus. Unfortunately I don't seem to have any photos, but other people on VT do have plenty...they can also probably explain about them in a more eloquent way too!

In the Christian Quarter known as Jdeida, there are many beautiful old houses...one of them, Bayt Ajiqbash, has been renovated and turned into a museum. The museum exhibits were the standard Syrian affair of stuffed dummies modelling old clothes and unlabelled bits and pieces, but what you are really there to see is the house itself, which is a beautiful old pile built around a central courtyard filled with fountains and trees.
