The Nicosia District, the largest of the island, includes all of the Solea and Pitsilia valleys, and parts of the Marathasa region, with mountain villages, fruit orchards, hill resorts and countless Byzantine churches and monasteries, a contrast to the villages and ancient sites in the plains. On a day trip from Nicosia or Limassol, either with a tour group or by rented car, it is possible to visit a number of the refreshing mountain villages and their unique painted churches, outstanding examples of a remarkable indigenous art form which incorporates foreign influences. This is an experience you should not miss if you want to truly appreciate Cyprus' rich folk heritage.
Staying the night in one of the hill resorts will give you more time to appreciate the beautiful scenery and explore further. Almost all the churches are kept locked, and finding the priest or caretaker who has the key can be a time-consuming process. However, it often leads to pleasant encounters with friendly villagers who are usually more than eager to show guests the notable aspects of their cultural heritage. After they have done so, you will often be invited to share some wine or food, a pleasant way to while away a few hours.
