Munich is the capital of Bavaria, a beer-quaffing and sausage-eating city and also, a vast open-air beer hall. :-)
I had only one day to see Munich because of my rushed travel schedule. According to the suggestion of most travel books – giving yourself at least 2-3 three days to cover its museums and gardens, my journey there could not say ideally.
Most of my time there was strolling around the Marienplatz, which was the pivotal square of Munich. The square itself was a typical European plaza in my point of view with grand town hall surrounded by marvellous buildings in rectangle. I was enjoyed seeing so many people there, thousands of tourists and local people walking around doing shopping and sightseeing together which made the whole city very alive to me. There were so many things to see around the square, even a small windowsill or a tiny doorknob has its style and beautiful flowers decorated every buildings, that I used up my whole day to enjoy it.
Another entertaining area was Viktualienmarkt, just south of Marienplatz. I remembered I was there at around 2 o’clock in the afternoon, but I was still surprised seeing thousands of people there having their drinks together in the sunshine. As far as I could see, there were no other drinks but beers, different kinds of beer in big mugs. The size of the mug, which Municher used to hold their beer, was so large that I could not believe some of them could have 2-3 mugs on hand and seemed already finished 2-3 mugs yet. I could not drink that much even in Coca-cola. :-) Actually it was so funny to see hundreds of men drinking alcohol at noon, which was not the proper time to have a pint in many other countries. I came to believe the saying was true that all German could drink beers all day long. :-)
I did not have a chance to sample the local brews seriously, which was my biggest pity to my Munich trip. When I had my only lunch there at a roadside open café, I did ordered a bottle of local *fake* beer. The reason why I called it fake beer was that it contained no alcohol at all but still looked like beer in the exactly beer colour and tasted like lager. Therefore, that lunch drink was the first time for me drinking to the limit of my capacity with no worry about being drunk. So fun!! :-) |

Henkster Wed Mar 5, 2003 11:04 UTC Bavarian architecture is usually Baroque, which is anything but simple. And 2-3 days are by far not enough to see everything. |
