Before my going to Berlin, she was the last destination of my European travel list because I thought that city might have few things left to see after experienced the 1st and 2nd World War. But when I landed that city in August 2002 and had a chance to see what Berlin was by myself, I realized how wrong I was before.
I was in Berlin 2 whole days and lucky me, during my time there, the weather was so gorgeous that the city could show me in her most charming angle. Although almost everything of Berlin was ruined in the bombing of the 2nd World War, Berliner has brought everything back to the world with their passion and inspiration. Strolling through Alexanderplatz area, there were so many magnificent buildings standing in their special elegant styles individually caught my eyes. At that moment, I could not stop wandering whether the city was the one, which bombed thoroughly during the 2nd World War? :-) All the ancient buildings there kept telling me that they were there for many decades and I could not find any pieces of war or bombing left but peace and tranquillity.
There are also many modern buildings in Berlin that remind all tourists Germany is the strongest economical giant in European continent now. The skyscraper of Mercedes-Benz headquarter is strongly impressed everyone there by its massive logo on the top which can be seen everywhere easily in the centre place of Berlin. The big names of Germany are not only Mercedes, but also BMW, Audi, etc. All these big names with their stunning cars demonstrating in their high-street showwindows announce the world how great the German is doing at the moment.
I am not an addict of history so that I could not comment the Berlin Wall in a very decent way. Actually I was a bit scared to face such a heavy historical issue somehow. However when I stood at the Checkpoint and watched around, I suddenly could understand how weird the Berlin Wall was established and how great it was when people destroyed it. There are many pictures in the museum that reveal the reason why the Wall was introduced and how it worked in its 40+ years lifecycle. A wall was established and resulted two different worlds artificially. A race was forced being separated side by side although they have the same kind of culture and knowledge. From all historical pictures and evidences in the museum, even from the postcards, I could see how nasty the policy was between two different kinds of social systems and also how did it suffer the people there.
As my personal feeling to my Berlin trip, I think it is a perfect one with gorgeous sunshine, brilliant view, deep considerable history and kind travel-mates. Nothing could complain at all but thanks. |
