We spent a couple of weeks in Penang in April 2004, booked through Kuoni, a last minute deal staying at the Casurina Hotel in Batu Ferringhi, then stopped off in KL on the way home. As well as a fair amount of sunbathing, we managed to fit in a two-day trip to Langkawi (you must go there if you can) as well as a couple of trips to Georgetown, a Penang island tour and stumbling across a mini-Thaipusam festival (see travelogue for pictures).
If you are going to Malaysia for the first time, I'd say that Penang is great for feeling as though you are seeing a real part of Malaysia and there's something to interest and surprise you all the time. Langkawi's beaches are amazing though in comparison so try to spend some time there as well if you are looking for a sun & sea break. |

| Pros: | "The people, food, lots to do and see." | | Cons: | "The beach looks good but the sea isn't too appealing." |
